A federal court in Delaware has ordered Symantec to pay $17 million in damages to Intellectual Ventures for violating two patents owned by the licensing company.
Intellectual Ventures had sought $298 million for the violations, which included intellectual property used in the company's Norton anti-virus product, and Symantec had previously tried to block the company from suing for hundreds of millions of dollars, according to a Reuters report.
The jury found Symantec guilty on two counts but not on a third charge of patent infringement. The patent licensing firm, which bought up more than 30,000 patents and applications, has filed suit against four large software firms. While two settled, Symantec and Trend Micro chose to go head-to-head with the company in court.
The Trend Micro trial, which may be impacted by the Symantec verdict, is scheduled to begin in May.
