Study: 0.5 percent of Twitter users produce half of the world's tweets

According to a new study conducted by Yahoo Research, nearly half of all consumed tweets are produced by a tiny minority of just 20,000 Twitter users.

Of the 260 million tweets with URLs that the study analysed, around 50 percent were made by a small collection of ‘elite’ users, who make up just 0.5 percent of the entire Twitter community.

The majority of these tweets were made by celebrities, bloggers, and assorted media outlet representatives. The study found that while the media produced the most tweets overall, celebrities were the most followed.

Predictably, the study found that while ordinary users consumed a high number of celebrity tweets, celebrities tended to stick to tweets from other famous people.
