Sony debuts OLED screen in portable MP3 player with noise cancelling earbuds

Sony really love their OLED. Sony reps confirmed to us that they intend to have it known as a screen technology and not just for making some very pretty and ultra skinny televisions (see our story here).

The Sony X-series walkman features a crispy, picture perfect 3inch OLED, perfect for watching TV and movies on the go - if you don't mind squinty eyes after an hour.

Available in both 16GB ($649) and 32GB ($799) storage capabilities, you're bound to enjoy the vast range of colours of the range, as long as its black. All jokes aside, we got a hands-on test of the X-series and were mightily impressed with the MP3 gadget that isn't an iPod.

The X-series comes bundled with a pair of kickass digital noise cancelling earbuds, good for removing upto 98% of ambient noise. Dubiously, we tried them and the results were very good.

The digital headphones work exceedly well - as good as more expensive Bose and Sennheiser brands.  It's a welcome addition to have with a strikingly attractive player.

The unit also utilises Sony's sound enhancement engine (DSEE) and it's in own digital amplifier, named like a kung-fu video game champion - the' S-master'. Better still, ordinary 3.5mm headphones are compatible with this player.

Built in WiFi and a YouTube button are nifty gimmicks, but we think the screen and sound quality is what sells this. For $799, it's obviously got Apple in its sights, but it won't please everybody, particularly if you prefer touchscreens, apps and games in your music player.

However, it will work with iTunes via content transfer software and drag and drop.

The unit goes on sale on the 6th of May.
