Silicon Graphics (SGI) said a customer in Japan will soon introduce an SGI Altix supercomputer based on 2048 Intel Itanium 2 processors that will have more than 13 terabytes of memory -- "the world's largest memory capacity," according to the firm.
The system is being built for Japan's Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) for work in developing energy systems, SGI said of the Altix 3700 Bx2 model, which runs Linux. SGI said its Japan unit cooperated with Fujitsu Limited in winning a competitive bidding contest to supply the supercomputer to JAERI.
SGI said JAERI plans to utilise computation data from the Tokai Research Establishment and Naka Fusion Research Establishment in the installation.
The Tokai and Naka operations will be connected to a high-speed multiplexer to allow for access from geographically scattered locations. The Altix system will be used to create 3D visualisation renderings, SGI said.
