Samsung: We have not sold 800,000 Galaxy Gear watches

Samsung has said it's sold 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatches - but those sales are to retailers and the distribution channel, not consumers.

The company issued a statement saying its Galaxy Gear devices were selling well, in response to reports suggesting otherwise.

"Samsung Galaxy Gear receives positive consumer feedback globally, and we have sold 800,000 in two months," Samsung claimed.

That figure would be encouraging indeed, given the Gear's negative reviews - and its limited support. The $399 watch works with devices running Android 4.3, which at launch was only the Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1. Samsung has since made an upgrade available for other devices, but some users have hit problems with the update.

Reports last month also suggested that as many as 30% of Galaxy Gear watches bought at Best Buy in the US had already been returned.

Samsung has now confirmed that the 800,000 figure represents "sell-in" - that is, devices shipped to the channel, mobile operators and retailers - and doesn't mean that that many are actually on consumers' wrists. Samsung hasn't said how many it's actually sold to end users.
