Samsung, Kogan top consumer complaints register

Samsung Electronics and Kogan were the most complained about businesses in NSW in April,  according to the Fair Trading office.

The multinational electronics vendor registered 38 complaints relating to mobile phones and accessories, as well as electrical, electronic, whitegoods and gas appliances - 30 of which were from its Sydney Olympic Park store.

Kogan meanwhile received 36 complaints largely related to electrical and electronic goods, its lowest since November 2018, when it tied for first place with Apple at 29 complaints.

For both companies, most of the complaints related to quality of goods, specifically 32 incidents with Samsung and 24 incidents with Kogan.

Other consumer technology resellers and vendors also had at least ten complaints in April, with Harvey Norman netting 23 complaints, Apple with 19 complaints and LG Electronics registering 12 for the month.

This would be the first time this year that Kogan didn’t top the NSW Fair Trading complaints register, registering 70, 72 and 56 complaints on January, February and March 2019. Samsung meanwhile last held the top spot in August 2018.

Kogan also caught the ire of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission earlier this month, taking the online retailer to court for allegedly making false or misleading representations during a sales promotion.

The company denied the claims, accusing the ACCC of ignoring critical facts and matters when assessing the overall impression customers were given by the promotion.
