RIM Australia gets new boss

RIM has appointed a new managing director for Australia following Adele Beachley’s resignation in February.

Formerly RIM’s country director in the Phillippines, Ray Gillenwater will begin his new role on May 1.

He replaces interim Australian managing director Urpo Karjalainen, who is RIM’s Asia-Pacific senior vice-president.

Despite RIM’s recent financial results, Gillenwater said he believed there was a "fantastic opportunity" for its BlackBerry smartphone in Australia and New Zealand.

The BlackBerry maker last week reported a massive $US2.2 billion ($A2.1 billion) drop in net profit globally for the 2012 financial year.

Smartphone sales took a significant hit in Q4, with shipments down 25 percent from the 14.1 million shipped in the third quarter to 11.1 million.

Beachley vacated her position in early February to “pursue other interests”. Her resignation was followed by the departure of RIM’s global CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis.

Gillenwater said he looked forward to "working with our partners and talented internal teams to focus on our business strategy with an immediate emphasis on preparing for the highly anticipated BlackBerry 10 launch".
