Optus Business creates all-flash cloud in Sydney and Melbourne data centres with Pure Storage

Optus Business has launched a cloud and on-premises storage solution in partnership with enterprise all-flash vendor Pure Storage.

Optus All-Flash Storage, announced by the telco on Tuesday, allows Australian businesses to extend their base storage capabilities and is tailored to suit to all types of workloads.

The telco has white-labelled Pure Storage’s compact storage hardware to provide Australian organisations as an alternative to bigger on-premises spinning hard disk drive solutions. The Optus offering is built on Pure Storage’s portfolio of hardware including FlashArray//M, FlashBlade, and FlashStack.

An Optus spokesperson told CRN Pure Storage’s 1.5-petabyte M70 all-flash unit, will be deployed in Optus’ Sydney and Melbourne data centres for its cloud storage solution.

As for the on-premises solution, Optus said storage hardware would be owned, deployed and managed by Optus and be offered to any organisation for consumption on a utility service model, and can be deployed into any data centre chosen by the customer.

Optus All-Flash Storage will offer capacity as low as two terabytes and extend up into petabytes on two different pricing models: one for cloud and one for on-premises.

David Caspari, Optus Business technology and solutions vice president, said the move represented a streamlining of access and pricing for premium storage.

“The launch of Optus All-Flash Storage comes at a significant tipping point in the adoption of all-flash storage in Australia. Previously, businesses have been slow to adopt All-Flash storage due to perceived costs and complexity,” he said.

”This new platform can lower storage spend by up to 50 percent, meaning all-flash storage is now an accessible solution for businesses looking to upgrade their IT.”

Pure Storage ANZ country manager Mike Sakalas said flash storage’s shift from consumer devices to business applications was ramping up.
