Optus axes 180 workers in restructure

Optus has culled 180 middle and senior managers across its business as part of an ongoing restructure.

The telco said the roles were from sales, commercial, marketing and "back-office functions across all business units". The story was first broken by The Australian.

An additional 70 jobs that Optus had been advertising to fill would now also be scrapped, an Optus spokesman said.

"The impacted roles are the result of the rationalisation of management structure, role consolidation, team reorganisation and removal of duplication following a business review," the spokesman said.

The cuts would result in reduced operating expenses and "incremental productivity gains", according to the spokesman.

Optus said it had taken care not to put customer service levels at risk.

The telco and its subsidiaries had about 10,000 employees.
