Microsoft is doubling its OneDrive storage for mobile users from 15GB to 30GB, providing they opt to back up their photos automatically to the cloud service.
The company said it was upgrading the amount of storage available to mobile users after "listening to commentary about storage on the new iPhones", which were released on Friday, and "wanted to get [users] more storage right away".
The 30GB offer isn't as straightforward as it might first appear, however. Rather than giving users the full storage capacity to use as they wish, it's split 50/50 between a 15GB base level of storage and a 15GB "camera roll bonus".
The announcement was aimed squarely at recruiting new users who have purchased an iPhone 6, as well as existing iPhone and iPad owners upgrading to iOS 8.
"For those getting ready to install iOS 8, this means you won't have to delete a bunch of photos or apps to make room for the upgrade," Microsoft said.
"For those buying a new phone, it means you can take all the high-resolution photos and videos you want without worrying about the amount of storage you have," it added.
Windows Phone and Android users haven't been left out from the storage upgrade completely. They will automatically have their capacity increased, but as with the iPhone 6 and iOS 8 offer, they will need to enable automatic photo backup.
If you want to get your hands on the 30GB upgrade you need to move quickly, though, as it's only available between now and the end of September.
