Nextgen Networks is an Australian-owned telecommunciations carrier that operates an optical fibre network.
In an interview with CRN, Sykes said fibre networks are terrific in carrying services across long distances and not just in cities.
“The service has increased speeds over DSL services, which won’t do it anymore for companies looking for speeds over 10 -100 gigabytes,” he said.
“Fibre is a very modern technology which allows for multi–site delivery.”
Currently Nextgen focuses on providing direct and wholesale products to customers like ASG and BlueCentral.
“We aren’t as aggressive in recruiting resellers for our fibre products as we were for our DSL products,” said Sykes.
“A lot of resellers have customers that are still using DSL products. However, I see it as an advantage for resellers if they move towards fibre.
“It’s more than just a future technology, over the next two years more end users will move towards this technology as their company’s broadband demands increase.
“DSL is crippled by bandwidth capacity.”
Sykes doesn’t believe that the Federal Government’s national broadband network (NBN) project will have much effect on business customers.
He believes businesses are already currently using services that provide them with high connection speeds.
“Businesses already have their own NBN and the government’s plans will relate more to the residential market and some business owners,” said Sykes.
In early June, the optic fibre network provider purchased Silk Telecommunications, giving it access to regional networks in Victoria and South Australia – furthering its ability to provide services to the majority of Australian capital cities.
