NextDC opens Canberra data centre

NextDC has officially opened the doors of its C1 data centre in Canberra, its third facility in Australia to be brought online.

The first non-carrier customers actually started moving into C1 at the end of July, according to a blog post.

The 6000m² facility is a former government data centre located in the north-west of the Australian Capital Territory.

"Security at C1 is unparalleled, with the building having been originally constructed in close consultation with Australia's main security and intelligence agency, ASIO, to meet the high standards of the Australian Tax Office for holding highly sensitive personal data," NextDC said in a stock exchange statement (pdf).

The firm performed some upgrades on site, and is planning future works to introduce free air cooling systems for the "upper level data halls".

The facility is the third in NextDC's burgeoning portfolio, which also includes B1 in Brisbane and M1 in Melbourne.
