New ERP category debuts on DTA's BuyICT Software Marketplace

The Australian government's Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) has introduced a new enterprise resource planning (ERP) category on its BuyICT Software Marketplace.

DTA aims to provide government agencies with broader access to a diverse range of ERP products and services, marking a strategic shift in how the Australian Public Service (APS) manages its corporate systems.

The new category, accessible via BuyICT.gov.au, offers a comprehensive array of core and edge ERP solutions, and eight related services:

  • Research and design services
  • Project and change management services
  • Business analysis and process optimisation services
  • Application software development services
  • Cybersecurity services
  • Solutions implementation, integration, and testing services
  • Data analytics and business intelligence services
  • Training, learning and development services

Financial management, human resources, payroll, and workforce management systems, for the needs of government entities are included.

The use of this new ERP category is mandated for Non-corporate Commonwealth Entities (NCEs).

It also extends the availability to Corporate Commonwealth Entities (CCEs) and state and territory governments.

This inclusive approach ensures that a wide spectrum of public sector organisations can benefit from the expanded marketplace.

DTA's general manager of the digital investment advice and sourcing division, Wayne Poels, said the the change gives the APS more autonomy and choice in modernising their ERP systems.

"The establishment of the new category means agencies now have access to a wider variety of technologies, vendors and innovative solutions that best meet their needs and budgets," Poels said.

The introduction of this category represents a collaborative effort between the Department of Finance and the DTA.

It is designed to simplify the procurement process for ERP products and services, potentially leading to more efficient and cost-effective implementations across the public sector.

By offering new opportunities for small to medium-sized businesses to sell ERP solutions to the APS, the government aims to stimulate growth in the Australian technology sector.

This approach aligns with broader government objectives to support local industries through strategic procurement practices.

The new category is part of a forward-looking strategy to equip the APS with the necessary tools to manage corporate systems effectively, both now and in the future.

It reflects a recognition of the rapidly evolving technology landscape and the need for government agencies to stay agile and responsive.

To ensure the ongoing success and relevance of this initiative, the DTA and Department of Finance have committed to continued collaboration with industry sellers and government agencies.

This ongoing engagement aims to ensure that the approach and new category remain fit for purpose, supporting increased competition in the ERP market and driving the enhancement of government service delivery.

The move towards a more diverse and competitive ERP marketplace is expected to yield several benefits for the public sector that include potentially lower costs through increased competition, access to cutting-edge technologies, and the ability to tailor solutions more precisely to specific agency needs.
