NEC Australia catches $8m Sydney Trains contract

NEC Australia has won a contract with Transport for New South Wales to upgrade the IT security of Sydney Trains.

The $8 million contract covers a "non-invasive solution" to improve IT security for Sydney Trains’ Advanced Train Running Information Control System (ATRICS).

A Transport spokesperson didn't give CRN specifics, but said the contract covers "hardware, software and services" from NEC, while tender documents mentioned "Firewall network security equipment".

ATRICS is a proprietary system used by Transport for NSW train controllers to manage operations across the Sydney Trains network.

“[The contract] was awarded after a rigorous selection process, as NEC’s proposal was considered the best value for money,” the spokesperson told CRN.

The contract runs from 15 May 2019 to 29 April 2024 and lists Sydney-based Insentra as a subcontractor.

The Transport spokesperson did not expand further on Insentra’s role in the deal.

“NEC is pleased to have been chosen to implement this very important, multifaceted project for Sydney Trains," an NEC Australia spokesperson told CRN.

Everyone knows how important the Sydney Trains network is to keeping the city moving and NEC looks forward to being a key part of the ATRICS project”.
