Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) is in talks to buy Motorola's telecoms equipment division, according to reports.
An article in The Wall Street Journal citing people "familiar with the matter" claimed that a deal worth between US$1.1bn and US$1.3bn could be struck within the next few weeks.
A spokesperson for NSN said that the company does not "comment on rumour and speculation about our involvement in this sort of activity".
Motorola was contacted for comment.
The speculation comes just two weeks after Motorola filed a government order allowing it to split the company into Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions.
NSN, meanwhile, has been keen to expand its presence in the North American market for some time, narrowly missing out on two acquisitions from bankrupt Canadian firm Nortel last year.
Firstly, wireless telephone network provider Ericsson acquired the CDMA and LTE assets of Nortel for US$1.13bn, beating NSN's bid of US$650m.
US network equipment manufacturer Ciena then won the right to buy Nortel's optical networking and carrier Ethernet businesses after outbidding NSN with an offer of US$769m.
