Microsoft has unveiled a Skype-based platform for small businesses, after yesterday announcing it would shutter its Messenger IM service and move its 100 million users into the Skype user base.
Microsoft launched the voice-over-IP service for Windows 8 two weeks ago, following its $US8.54 billion acquisition of the company last year.
Small business users of Skype are now able to access Microsoft’s Skype in the workspace (SITW), a free platform to allow global connectivity between a businesses’ partners and customers.
The platform is available to all Skype users today. Businesses can join the service through their existing Skype account.
Microsoft said SMBs can use promotional tools to market and demonstrate products and services, monitor and create new business opportunities with customers and clients, and instant message and conduct video meetings.
Microsoft said the service has been running for six months in beta with 500 businesses on board.
“We aim to connect millions of small businesses with Skype in the workspace and believe that, by taking advantage of this shared network, businesses can develop the range of tools they need to grow, regardless of location or industry,” said Ural Cebeci, head of SMB marketing at Skype in a statement.
“From the designer in San Francisco looking to source textile suppliers in Thailand to the London consultant connecting with clients in Milan, the possibilities are endless.”
