Melbourne partner Rampage Systems takes Protect from Telstra private cloud to Microsoft Azure

Melbourne Microsoft partner Rampage Systems has migrated the infrastructure for severance scheme Protect from a Telstra private cloud to Microsoft Azure.

Protect is an industry severance scheme representing more than 30,000 workers in electrical, manufacturing, maritime, rail and construction.

After Telstra set an end-of-life date for the VMware private cloud platform that hosted Protect's client database, the organisation was looking to migrate to a long-term cloud provider.

As Protect's system was already running on Microsoft Windows Server infrastructure, the organisation decided it wanted to move to Azure public cloud.

Rampage Systems was selected to design, rebuild and migrate the 'ProtectNet' system with a seven-week deadline. Protect also wanted its existing production environment and business operations to stay operational during the migration.

The company designed infrastructure for about 10 servers in October, using a range of Microsoft products, including Windows 2016 web servers, application servers, mobile app servers, load balancers, SQL 2017 servers, Windows Server clusters, transaction servers and a Palo Alto virtual firewall.

Rampage also facilitated a high-speed fibre link to provide a private circuit connection to Azure using Express Route. Azure Backup and Azure Site recover were also deployed to form Protect's disaster recovery and business continuity.

The design phase was completed by the end of October, and a proof concept soon followed. The entire project ended up being completed seven days ahead of schedule, allowing Protect to bring forward its cutover date by a week.

Based in Patterson Lakes, south of Melbourne, Rampage Systems also partners with HPE, Cisco and Sonic Wall.
