In a race that already includes a former secretary of state, a retired neurosurgeon, and a billionaire real estate mogul, John McAfee, founder of the software company that bears his name and an ex-fugitive, is now throwing his name into the mix.
His campaign filed papers this week, making it official that he'll run during the 2016 US presidential race.
Although his filing states that he'll “found a new party yet to be announced,” McAfee clarified in the hours following his paperwork that he'd be part of the “Cyber Party”.
He hasn't expanded much on his platform but told Wired that US leadership is “illiterate” on technology that supports everyday life.
He cited government backlash on encryption and massive agency data breaches as examples of this lacking understanding.
McAfee's campaign website and Twitter account are already live.
