Kroll recovers data from "stuck" iPhones and iPads

Kroll Ontrack has developed a way to recover data from the latest iPhones and iPads which are stuck in "Recovery" mode or "Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU)" mode.

The company has devised a way to temporarily bypass the problem, accessing the data through user's log-in information.

This new method increases the chances of recovering encrypted data by up to 60 percent, according to Kroll.

A diagnostic report shows the quality of recoverable files on the Apple device. Users can see what data will be returned before committing to paying for the recovery.

Adrian Briscoe, Kroll Ontrack's general manager APAC, said: "Our solution does not defeat or bypass the device’s encryption, but rather temporarily bypasses the logical corruption without "jail breaking" the device to access the data using the device and customer’s user access credentials."

Once the recovery is complete, Kroll Ontrack provides both the raw files and a backup file to perform a full restore from iTunes to an Apple mobile device, providing a point in time recovery file for future use.
