Ingram: 41 jobs go, new hires announced

Ingram's new commercial units will make the distributor more nimble, said Jay Miley, vice president and managing director A/NZ Ingram.

A total of 59 positions were eliminated, or 7 percent of its workforce; 18 of those positions were temporary roles. However, another 25 jobs were created in higher growth areas.

Employees given redundancies were being encouraged to apply for the new positions, said Miley.

The MD would not say in which departments the 25 new positions were created because it would reveal strategic advantage to competitors.

The new company structure is more compact, with several divisions combining under new leadership.

John Walters will lead a new commercial sales and marketing team which will make Ingram Micro more flexible and responsive to changes in the market, said Miley.

Ingram also made big changes to the groups supporting two of its key vendors. Matt Sanderson leads a new Microsoft business unit that unifies the distributor's representation of Microsoft products and services.

"Microsoft is a very material relationship for us. I believe there's an opportunity to grow with Microsoft and the changes are a reflection of that," said Miley.

Matt Sanderson also takes responsibility for the various HP divisions of the business, which will be combined under a single, solutions-focused HP group.

The consolidation of HP divisions did not represent a shrinking commitment to the vendor. "Quite the contrary," said Miley. "There's really no material change in HP."

The rationale behind the centralised leadership was to give the company a faster reaction time to events in the economy, said Miley.

"Everybody needs to be marching to the beat of the same drum," said Miley.

"You need to be quick in this market - the more spread out you are under different leadership the harder it is to respond quickly."
