HCLTech migrates CommBank's data platform to AWS

Commonwealth Bank of Australia has completed migrating its entire data platform to Amazon Web Services in partnership with technology services provider HCLTech.

The secure transition involved migrating over 61,000 data pipelines to the cloud environment.

It began in July 2024, as part of the the bank's strategy to accelerate artificial intelligence integration across its operations, and is now complete.

The scalable cloud-based data platform will integrate with other channels across the bank to drive faster, more personalised customer and employee experiences using advanced data, AI and analytics technologies.

HCLTech said that it delivered the re-platforming project at an "accelerated pace" without compromising data integrity or system performance through phased migration and rigorous testing processes.

Terri Sutherland, CommBank's lead for data platforms, pointed to the strategic importance of the cloud migration for the bank's AI capabilities.

"Every day, we're using AI to make around 55 million decisions intended to benefit our customers and our people," Sutherland said.

"We have over 2000 AI models feeding on approximately 157 billion data points – making CBA one of the largest corporate users of AI in the country."

"This migration represents a significant milestone and provides the foundation for CommBank to accelerate the innovative use of AI and agentic AI to deliver better customer and employee experiences," Jamie Simon, AWS' director of financial services for Australia and New Zealand said.

The successful migration enables CommBank to simplify its technology stack and reduce its on-premises data centre footprint whilst scaling operations according to demand.
