Google voice search lands on desktops

Google Chrome users can now search Google.com by simply saying "OK Google" following the download of a beta plugin from the Chrome Web Store.

The process will be familiar to Android and iOS users already using voice search on mobile. The desktop version also includes functions from Google's personal assistant, Google Now, such as the ability to set timers and reminders. Unlike the mobile version however, it isn't possible to dictate messages using the voice function.

Installing the extension will give Google access to your PC's microphone. Provided it's switched on, Google will listen for the "OK, Google" command and a search query every time you visit Google.com. It will automatically stop listening if you don't say anything after five minutes.

In theory, that should mean users can launch voice search from Google.com without manually clicking on the microphone icon. However, initial user reviews suggest the automatic listening function doesn't work for everyone.

And as per the mobile version, the accuracy of the search will likely depend on background noise and your proximity to the microphone.

Google also said the service is only available on US devices and the Google.com domain for now, meaning it may not work properly on Australian PCs just yet. While we managed to install the extension successfully, the search function didn't automatically pick up the "OK, Google" command or accurately transcribe search queries.
