Global data warehouse Snowflake expands reach with Sydney AWS deployment

Snowflake Computing has launched into Australia with a footprint in Amazon Web Services to support the US-based data warehouse's Asia-Pacific expansion.

The deployment will ensure local hosting of Snowflake's Australian customers, while also opening opportunities for new clients.

"A data warehouse built for the cloud, with global availability, enables organisations to integrate and analyse all their data no matter where they are," Snowflake chief executive Bob Muglia said.

According to Forrester, Australian spending on hardware maintenance will drop six percent in 2018 as more businesses migrate to the public cloud.

"Cloud has enabled many companies to reduce the complexity of their back-end systems and leverage scale and automation to drive innovation and business agility,” Forrester principal analyst Tim Sheedy said.

He added that Australia had become a major market for cloud providers, citing Microsoft and Amazon Web Services' local data centres, adding that data sovereignty and latency are of top priority.

The Sydney deployment is Snowflake's fourth on AWS globally, following Oregon, Northern Virginia and Frankfurt.

"By providing an Australian deployment, Snowflake enables customers with Australian data to keep that information close to home,” Muglia added. “They now have more control over their data and how they comply with Australian data protection regulations."
