Equinix will spend more than US$97 million on its fourth Sydney data centre, citing predictions that the Australian data centre service market will be worth $1.7 billion in five years' time.
The SY4 facility in inner-city Alexandria will be more than 12,500 square metres in size and will host 3,000 cabinets by completion. The first phase will see 1.5000 cabinets ready by the second quarter of 2016.
Equinix is touting the ability for the new facility to connect via a dedicated fibre loop to its three other Sydney data centres, which boast connectivity to more than 250 cloud providers and 130 networks.
The facility follows tens of millions spent on similar facilities around Australia, including up to $60 million Equinix expects to invest in its new Melbourne ME1 data centre.
As a comparison, NextDC spent at least $221 million fitting out five data centres in Australia, and more if construction costs are included. Its Melbourne M1 Centre cost $85 million.
In announcing the new Sydney facility, Equinix pointed to predictions by Frost & Sullivan that the Australian data centre service market will reach $1.7 billion by 2020. Revenues were estimated to be approximately $698 million in 2013.
Welcoming the Equinix launch was New South Wales Minister for Trade Stuart Ayres, who stated that the state government had worked with Equinix to support the company’s growth in Sydney.
