Equinix is spending US$28 million (AUD$39 million) to expand its ME1 Melbourne data centre with an extra 750 cabinets.
An additional 375 cabinets will be added in Q4 2015, and another 375 in Q4 2016, bringing the total number of cabinets in ME1 to 1125.
ME1 was opened in March and initially cost the global data centre company $66 million for 375 cabinets plus the cost of land.
More than 70 customers are already located in the ME1 facility, including Telstra, Vocus, Symantec and Bulletproof.
In April 2014, Microsoft announced Equinix as an ExpressRoute data centre partner, to offer customers private fibre connection services to Azure.
Equinix announced in April it was splashing out $97 million on a fourth Sydney data centre, its fifth in Australia.
Equnix Australia managing director Jeremy Deutsch said the expansion will create even more interconnections to Melbourne.
“Melbourne is known as the hatching capital of Australia, having a strong research and development base, a supportive business environment and the presence of established information, communication and technology companies,” said Deutsch.
