Equinix invests $5m in Sydney IBX data centre

Equinix has announced that it is investing $5 million to expand the capacity of its Sydney-based Internet Business Exchange centre.

The investment by the data centre and Internet exchange service provider will see an increase in capacity of about 50 percent.

The expansion follows similar activity in the US and strong demand from local and regional businesses for co-location services and connectivity to a large aggregation of network service providers.

Equinix’s Sydney IBX currently lays claim to more than 150 customers such as
CITEC, Hostworks, and Hermes Precisa.

Detailing the investment, Equinix Australia MD Doug Oates said demand for higher-end collocation space was now outpacing supply.

"This expansion in Australia is a response to demands from corporations seeking secure and robust facilities to deploy a convenient connectivity infrastructure by working under the same roof as wide diversity of telecommunications providers,” he said in a statement.

"Equinix continues to grow and we are looking at further expansion in the region through both building new data centres and forming strategic partnerships."
