Equinix is growing the footprint of its Sydney and Melbourne data centre footprints, with cabinet expansions in Sydney complete and Melbourne facilities set to expand.
The company announced it will add additional capacity in its International Business Exchange data centres in Melbourne by adding 375 new cabinets in a $13.3 million investment in the Port Melbourne centre. The expansion brings Equinix’s ME1 facility up to 1500 and is set to be complete by Q3 2018.
The news follows the colocation provider’s December 2017 announcement that it would acquire Australian data centre operator Metronode for $1 billion, a move that will bring the company’s total IBX data centre footprint in Australia up to 15.
Equinix also revealed the second phase of its SY4 data centre in Sydney was completed, following a $52.3 million investment. SY4’s expansion saw its capacity double from 1500 cabinets to 3000 and increased total usable floor space to more than 12,000 square metres.
“These expansions in our Melbourne and Sydney locations signify key milestones in our commitment to continue development of our national footprint in Australia,” Equinix Australia managing director Jeremy Deutsch said.
“Building on our recent acquisition of Metronode, our expansion highlights our relentless commitment to increasing our capabilities and meeting the growth and expectations of our customers to scale over time.
“Both our Sydney and Melbourne campus locations are key digital hubbing points providing customers with direct and private access to a multitude of clouds, service providers, business partners, and end customers affirming our market-leading position.”
Equinix’s acquisition of Metronode, expected to close in the first half of this year, will see the colocation giant acquire new locations in Perth, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
The company has a global footprint of 190 IBX data centres in 48 markets. Equinix has 30 IBX data centres in Asia-Pacific.
