Equinix completes $37 million Melbourne data centre upgrade

Equinix has completed a $37 million upgrade to its ME1 Port Melbourne data centre to nearly double its capacity.

The expansion added another 750 cabinets and 17,900 square feet (1,663 square metres) to Equinix's only Victorian data centre, taking ME1 to 1,125 cabinets and 35,790 square feet (3.325 square metres) of co-location space.

The multinational co-lo and connection provider said that internet service providers could benefit from a reduction in IP transit costs and improved end user experience using Equinix' internet exchange service, which aggregates thousands of peering sessions onto a shared fabric.

Managing director Jeremy Deutsch added that 25 percent of Australian businesses were located in Melbourne, and the upgrade would support further expansion in the city.

"Melbourne is a significant site for us, and one of the most requested by our customers. With our twin-metro strategy in Australia, customers can leverage the thriving customer base and the rapidly expanding ecosystems available to them," said Deutsch.

Equinix has 28 data centres in Asia-Pacific, including three in Sydney that deliver local availability for Amazon Web Services. Other customers include Telstra, Vocus, Bulletproof, Microsoft and Symantec.

The company is currently constructing its fourth data centre in Sydney, SY4, which is expected to have cost $121 million on completion.
