EMC outlines plans for Information Intelligence Group

EMC World 2010: The head of EMC's information intelligence group has revealed the latest plans for his branch of the company.

Mark Lewis, president of what used to be known as EMC content management and archiving, said that his recently re-named group would focus on a number of new partnerships while keeping a long-term goal of moving into the cloud.

Lewis said that the goal will be to eventually offer a system which can manage both private cloud data and information based in "public cloud" web services, which EMC estimates will comprise almost a third of all corporate data in then years.

"Most businesses are going to be hybridised," explained Lewis.

"Most organisations are not going to be all on one or the other."

In the group's more immediate future will be a tie-up with Microsoft SharePoint. Lewis said that EMC's SourceOne governance tool would be available later this quarter when SharePoint 2010 launches.

Lewis said that the tool could be especially important for SharePoint, whose spread in the business world he classified as 'viral' due to a phenomena of often being introduced by end users rather than a CIO or IT staff.

"When we're talking about organising our business it's absolutely critical that we let users have that capability, but we also put the right governance behind it."

Microsoft will not be the only company inking a deal with EMC's Information Intelligence Group.

Lewis also revealed a pending announcement with SAP for a combined financial services offering as well as a deal with integration specialist Informatica.
