EMC clinches $1.6m NSW Police storage rollout

EMC has won a $1.6 million contract to improve the NSW Police Force's digital storage and search capabilities. 

The five-year contract will see EMC licence, support and maintain the system, as well as provide training and implementation for a pilot site as well as initial system configuration.

The platform, based on EMC Documentum, will have up to 1,000 users and is designed to improve storage, search and general management of all types of digital files for various NSW Police Force Commands.

A police spokesperson told CRN the system is designed to reduce reliance on network drives and hardware devices. Users access the system via a browser interface and the data is accessed via an SQL database. 

Reaping the rewards

EMC's win follows a number of major IT contracts with law enforcement agencies around the country in the last 12 months.

One of the biggest in recent months was Perth firm Kinetic IT's contract worth at least $164 million with Victoria Police in February.

Another $20.9 million was awarded to Datacom in January to manage the IT systems of CrimTrac, which runs key law enforcement databases used by the country's police forces. 

More than $100 million was allocated to the Department of Police and Justice in NSW last June by the state government in the lead up to the 2015 election. This included $45 million to be spent replacing NSW Police Force technology assets.
