Dimension Data helps Mimecast launch Australian data centres

Email security vendor Mimecast has opened two Australian data centres and a Sydney office, as it ramps up Australian activity through partners like Dimension Data.

Mimecast announced that co-located facilities have started operation in two separate News South Wales sites, though it would not disclose whose data centres or the precise locations.

The company will provide support for Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Exchange and Google email environments. Specifically, email continuity, security and archiving products will be offered out of the local sites.

"We [understand] the growing importance of data sovereignty for Australian organisations. Ensuring all data is held in Australia helps health, finance and government clients to meet regulatory requirements, and removes concerns from finance or risk departments who are concerned about hosting data offshore on foreign cloud services," said Mimecast chief executive and co-founder Peter Bauer.

Bauer joined with Mimecast's Australia country manager, Nicholas Lennon, yesterday, along with respresentatives from clients NRMA and Dimension Data, to discuss the vendor's local growth.

Dimension Data is also a channel partner for Mimecast, although Mimecast's new data centres are run independently of the solutions provider.

Mimecast also announced it was opening a Sydney office to add to its Melbourne presence. Mimecast Australia now had 22 employees across the two branches.

Not outsourcing responsibility

Bauer said businesses that use cloud services to meet their email needs are not absolved of responsibility for employee and customer security.

"Software-as-a-service is not outsourcing, it's a utility," he said. "The responsibility [for security] has not transferred to the provider. The customer still has to exercise due discipline and governance."

Mimecast was founded in the United Kingdom by South African entrepreneurs in 2003, and now has offices in the UK, US, South Africa and Australia.
