Datacom has won a $1.4 million contract to develop an Amazon Web Services environment for Victoria’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).
The department, with the help of Datacom, is taking control of real-time water data delivery, pertaining to water level and quality data from 950 surface water sites and groundwater bores in Victoria. Datacom will develop the systems into which the data is telemetered.
The data management service was previously managed by an undisclosed third party, which collected the field water data. The outsourcing, however, was seen by the department as a business risk, according to a government spokesperson.
Data processed by the new system will be displayed on the DELWP’s public facing Water Management Information System website, which the department says will undergo a significant upgrade.
“Currently data (non-telemetered) in WMIS is approximately two-to-three months old, WMIS currently has no capacity to display telemetered data,” a DELWP spokesperson told CRN.
“Under the new arrangements, telemetered data will be displayed within one hour of collection and non-telemetered data (such as data collected from field visits) will be displayed within two weeks of collection.”
The rollout includes provisioning of AWS cloud hosting infrastructure as well as management, maintenance and ongoing support of the department's project.
Datacom has been involved with a number of other application updates with the department in recent years.
“Datacom is proud to continue our work with the Victorian Government’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), on yet another exciting project,” Datacom Australia commercial managing director Bob Peebles told CRN.
“Our previous work on DELWP’s application management system for the Water Register, and DELWP’s fuel management system show that the relationship is strong, and we will continue our work to create new and innovative solutions that benefit the community in Victoria, and across Australia.”
