BlackBerry's CEO has rated his firm's chance of survival at about 50 percent.
John Chen, speaking to The Financial Times, said there was a "50/50 chance" his recovery strategy for BlackBerry would be a success.
In a video interview, he later said that he would mark that success by when the firm breaks even and then becomes profitable again. He has predicted that BlackBerry could be profitable by 2016.
Chen said BlackBerry's chances of success have been helped by the firm's new handsets - particularly the Z3, codenamed the Jakarta, a sub-$200 smartphone built for the Indonesian market with its new partner, Foxconn.
He also pointed to the extension of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) to other platforms as another recent success.
Chen acknowledged that dramatic recoveries were rare in the industry. "When you look at turnaround history in the technology market... there's not a lot," he admitted. "But not too long ago, IBM has gone through it, and not too long before that Apple has gone through it."
"It's really about catching the technology market wave," he said. "And, if we've done it correctly, we could be a dominant player again."
