Earthwatch and Brother will work together to support critical conservation efforts focusing on Climate Change and Sustainable Resource Management.
Through this partnership, Brother will directly support research being conducted by Earthwatch into Climate Change in the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
Brother employees, stakeholders, customers and business partners will also have the opportunity to be part of an environmental volunteering program which will enable them to be a scientist for a day.
This will involve a one day in-field project across the five Australian states.
“Brother’s partnership with Earthwatch is a relevant and effective way of further driving the company’s mission to be an environmentally and socially responsible business,” said Yoshi Sugimoto, managing director Brother Australia,
“Brother is pleased to make a genuine contribution to the environment by supporting Earthwatch and its worthy conservation research and education initiatives.”
According to Richard Gilmore, CEO of Earthwatch Australia, Brother’s support of climate change and sustainable resource management research will assist in protecting and enhancing some of Australia’s most precious environmental assets.
“By directly taking part in a number of Earthwatch environmental research projects, Brother employees will be able to actively support the company’s commitment to decrease its environmental impact and reinforce Brother’s ‘5R’ environmental policy,” added Sugimoto.
Brother’s 5Rs stand for: Reduce waste material by recycling, Reuse products and waste material, Refuse to buy environmentally unfriendly products, Reform materials and use again and Recycle rather than scrap.
“Consideration for the environment is the cornerstone of all Brother’s operations. Safety and environmental impact will be primary focus at every stage of the product’s lifecycle from design, development, customer usage and disposal, to reuse and recycling,” said Sugimoto.
Some of the initiatives under Brother Earth will include: Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) where Brother avoids lead, mercury and other hazardous substances in the manufacture of products.
Also to Reduce Consumables and Hardware Wastage, to keep old hardware and consumables out of the landfill.
Brother is signatory of the National Packaging Convenant which aims to reduce the environmental effects of packaging on the Environment and has been awarded ISO 14001 Accreditation, a series of standards and guidelines which address all aspects of environmental management.
“Environmental conservation has been critically important to Brother International in recent years and we have introduced TCO'99 Accreditation, Energy Star Approval as well as Brother's Environmental Protection Measure, however, this new environmental policy re-affirms our local and international commitment,” added Sugimoto.
