Brightstar to distribute BlackBerry
BlackBerry hopes a restructure and expanding channels into retail will put it back on top.

Brightstar has expanded its distribution agreement with Research in Motion to cover the Oceania region.

Brightstar will distribute RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones, software and accessories and the recently launched PlayBook tablet device in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

It followed reports this week that RIM would slash 11 percent of its workforce amid flagging sales of its Blackberry devices and lukewarm reception for its PlayBook tablet.

And it will buy Swedish video editing company JayCut to boost the usability of the PlayBook’s high-definition cameras and HDMI output.

Adele Beachley, managing director of RIM Australia and New Zealand said Brightstar will help the former No.1 smartphone maker form relationships with retailers to lift sales.

Arturo Osorio, president of Brightstar Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa said it built on a successful global relationship between the companies.

“We look forward to harnessing our extensive relationships and utilising our innovative suite of channel services and product delivery tools to expand BlackBerry’s business across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands,” Osorio said.
