AWS debuts container registry, Python for Lambda

Amazon Web Services today unveiled a series of new developer-friendly tools at the re:Invent conference in Las Vegas.

Among a bunch of new Lambda features, AWS chief technology officer Werner Vogels' announcement of Python for Lambda received the loudest cheers from the 19,000-strong crowd.

Vogels said that Lambda has been "very popular" since its since its launch one year ago: "Lambda provides simple building blocks that end up in complex solutions."

Other Lambda innovations to debut at re:Invent were increased function duration, function versioning and aliasing, and scheduled functions.

Chief technology officer of AWS partner Bulletproof, John Ferlitio, told CRN that the new Lambda features were "really cool" and that it will help more people to "realise the benefit of cloud".

"Lambda is amazing in that no infrastructure is required for an app," Ferlito said.

Vogels also introduced the EC2 Container Registry to the conference audience. The service, available later this year, acts as a repository for managing container images and will be integrated within the existing EC2 Container Service that debuted in 2014.

"This fully managed registry will address the issues that I mentioned above by making it easy for you to store, manage, distribute, and collaborate around Docker container images," announced the cloud vendor on a blog post.
