Speaking as the AusCert conference, Senator Conroy said e-security and law enforcement will form a key part of planning, design and implementation of the Federal Government's $43 billion National Broadband Network.
"Securing the networks and services of Australia's connected economy is of great importance to the Federal Government as the Australian economy becomes more connected and reliant of digital technology," said Senator Conroy.
With high speed broadband, he said, Australia has the potential to revolutionise health, education and utilities, to create smart infrastructure and to invigorate regional economies. But this potential depends on the reliability of the broadband network such technologies connect with.
"As more vital services such as health care and electricity come to rely on broadband, the security of our networks must be the highest priority," Conroy said
"The same is true for smart infrastructure such as smart grids and smart bridges which require a whole range of networks that connect monitors and controls. All of these require secure and reliable broadband."
Additionally, the reliability of the supporting infrastructure of this broadband will be paramount for the success of smart grid innovation.
Conroy said a reliable network will ensure the country reaches its full potential.
"This will not only underpin the successful operation of these new services but also the general confidence of business decisions in the online environment.
"Confidence is a key factor of new services and will be essential to ensure that Australia reaches its full potential.
