Apple forced to pay $21m for unlicensed clock design

Apple has been ordered to pay up $US21 million to license the clock design for iOS 6, after using it without permission.

Apple was forced to pay Swiss national rail operator SBB for using the clock design on its iPad and iPhone without a license, according to a Swiss publication.

In use since 1944 by rail service, the minimalistic clock design has been honoured by the Museum of Modern Art, has been licensed to Swiss watch maker Modaine, and could technically be one of the most expensive timepieces eve.

SBB met with Apple in September to discuss the issue. A spokesperson told AFP the railway was 'rather proud that a brand as important as Apple is using our design."
