Roy Morgan Research anticipates that 1.6 million people – or nearly 40 percent of all mobile users in Australia – will upgrade to a new iPhone within the next year.
The findings come days ahead of an event dedicated to the reveal of Apple's next generation of iPhones. Apple is expected to unveil two new iPhones—the 5S and 5C—both of which are rumoured to be subtle revisions.
Roy Morgan's general manager of media and communications, George Pesutto, has said that sales of Apple's new iPhone will be driven by its established ecosystem.
"Part of Apple's competitive advantage lies within its operating system, which allows multiple devices to share functionality and information seamlessly," Pesutto said in a statement.
The more Apple devices a person own, the more likely they are to stick with the manufacturer.
Roy Morgan found that 85 percent of people who own the trio of iPhone, an iPad and an iMac intend on upgrading their iPhone within the next 12 months.
But even those with just one device - an iPhone, iPad or an iMac – will upgrade; the results found that more than half (59 percent) of these customers intend on purchasing or upgrading to a new iPhone.
"Apple has been successful in building a loyal customer base. Almost a million Australians aged 14+ now own an iPhone, an iPad and a Mac computer, while 8.6 million have at least one of these," Pesutto added.
Roy Morgan expects 39 percent of all new mobile phone users will buy an iPhone within the next 12 months, a statistic that represents 1.6 million Australians.
