Apple culls iPad 3

Just seven months after the launch of the 'new iPad', Apple has culled the third-generation tablet in favour of a newer, updated model.

The tablet has been replaced with the fourth-generation iPad, released by Apple this morning, alongside a smaller, 7.9in version of the flagship tablet, dubbed the iPad mini

The newer 'iPad 4' is identical in design to its predecessor, which was released in May to great fanfare. The new version however, has a faster processor, 720p front camera, Lightning dock connector, and 4G capability, which Apple confirmed will be compatible with Australia's 1800MHz spectrum

The second-generation iPad, the 'iPad 2' lives on, remaining at the same cut-price it received at the iPad 3's launch - $429 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model and $569 for the 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G model.

The fourth-generation iPad with Wi-Fi and 4G will be available from November 2, starting at $679 for the 16GB version, $789 for the 32GB version and $899 for the 64GB version. With Wi-Fi alone, it will retail from $539 for 16GB, $649 for 32GB and $759 for 64GB. It will be available for pre-order from this Friday.

In comparison, when the iPad 3 launched, it retailed for $539 outright for the 16GB Wi-Fi model, $649 for 32GB and $759 for 64GB. For Wi-Fi + 4G (which was not available in Australia, and Apple subsequently got a slap on the wrist for misleading marketing locally) the 16GB retailed for $679, the 32GB $789 and 64GB $899.
