Amazon working on video downloads
Leaving music to Apple and Microsoft.

Amazon is planning to launch a video download service in the US later next month, according to media reports.

A report on Advertising Age suggests that the online retailer is planning to launch the service in August.

Amazon Digital Video, or Amazon DV, will feature a subscription service and individual movie and TV shows.

The service has apparently taken a year to develop, and was originally conceived as a music service before being changed to focus on video.

Given Apple's stranglehold on the online music market, and Microsoft's plans to enter the space with its Zune player, Amazon decided to concentrate on videos instead, the report states.

The service will require users to download an application to access the service.
