Amazon Web Services is the latest cloud provider to be approved to host highly sensitive data for the Australian government and its departments at the ‘Protected’ level in its Sydney region.
The certification allows cloud providers to offer their services to government agencies that require their data to be stored at ‘protected’ level and requires approval from the Australian Signals Directorate.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre certified 42 AWS services which covers compute, storage, network, database, security, analytics, application integration, management and governance.
AWS Asia-Pacific regional managing director, worldwide public sector Peter Moore said the accreditation was a major milestone for existing customers and would pave the way for other government agencies to adopt AWS cloud services.
“This accreditation also generates new opportunities for our AWS Partner Network to build value-added services and solutions to serve AWS customers in the region and will inspire even more startups to build their businesses on AWS,” said Moore.
Head of ACSC Alastair MacGibbon said the organisation has also certified an additional four services to AWS’s UDLM CCSL offering.
This provides Australian Government agencies assurance that these services meet stringent Australian Government security requirements. The government provides a robust risk-management framework to assess cyber security risks. The ACSC recommends customers review the certification documentation and make sound risk-based decisions when choosing a cloud service.”
He added that the Digital Transformation Agency already uses AWS for its secure cloud0based platform cloud.gov.au for hosting website applications.
AWS becomes the sixth cloud provider to make the ASD’s Certified Cloud Services List following Vault Systems, Sliced Tech, Macquarie Government and Dimension Data, and the second hyper-scale cloud provider after Microsoft.
