Amazon reveals lightest Kindle ever

Amazon has unveiled its thinnest and lightest Kindle ever, with the device potentially able to last months between charges.

Kindle Oasis weighs 131g and is 3.4mm at its thinnest point – an average of 30 percent thinner than other Kindles and more than 20 percent lighter.

This has been achieved by using a featherweight polymer frame that is plated with metal by structural electroplating.

The device features an ergonomic grip that shifts the centre of gravity to the palm of the reader’s hand so it rests like a book.

This is designed to create a perfect balance so people can read comfortably for hours with one hand.

A built-in accelerometer detects whether users are reading with their left or right hand, and automatically rotates the page and page-turn buttons to match.

Amazon claims that Kindle Oasis can be used “for months without charging” due to a dual-battery charging system and a removable leather charging cover.

A new hibernation mode minimises power consumption when the device is inactive.

Kindle Oasis features a high-res 300ppi Paperwhite display that aims to provide crisp, laser-quality text.

It also includes a redesigned built-in front light that provides the brightest Kindle display ever.

Kindle Oasis can be pre-ordered for $449 from Amazon or Officeworks, which became a Kindle reseller in December 2015.

This is the eighth generation of Kindle, which originally launched in 2008.
