AFL star joins Melbourne's Broadband Solutions
Shaun Grigg and Sam Bashiry

Wi-fi provider Broadband Solutions has appointed AFL star Shaun Grigg as a business development manager.

“We’re always looking to acquire the best talent and that means looking in a whole range of places," said  Broadband Solutions managing director Sam Bashiry. "Technical ability can be taught, but passion and drive cannot.”

Grigg, who has played 151 games for Carlton and current team Richmond, is still in the middle of his football career at 27 years of age. But when Bashiry contacted him, he jumped at the chance of becoming his protege in the IT industry.

“It’s been fantastic to see how Sam operates. He knows his stuff and it’s fascinating to see many skills are shared across business and professional sport,” said Grigg.

“Training drives on-the-job performance and at the end of each day, reflection on what worked and what didn’t helps us make improvements for the next time round. I’ve learnt a lot already."

Bashiry met Grigg through mutual contacts and approached him about a job earlier this year during Broadband Solutions' hiring spree in support of its growth in New Zealand and Asia.

“The type of personal dedication required to make it to the top of professional sport is the same as that required to be a successful entrepreneur,” said Bashiry. “Shaun is motivated, down to earth and humble. That makes for a great learner."

Grigg was drafted by Carlton in 2006, where he played 43 games before he was traded to Richmond in 2010. The midfielder became a consistent performer at his second club, earning selection to the Australian international rules team in 2011.

Broadband Solutions placed number 23 in the 2015 CRN Fast50 with 60 percent revenue growth, to hit $15.4 million. The Melbourne firm made its name specialising in wi-fi deployments, focusing on the hospitality industry.

Richmond plays Port Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday night, with Grigg in the starting line-up. The Tigers have started the 2016 campaign with one win and four losses.
