It’s not often a version 7.8 release is a newsworthy item, but we’ll make an exception for Acronis because the debut of the new point release of the data protection company’s “Data Cloud” means its disaster recovery cloud just became available in Australia.
Acronis’ service can store data, virtual machines and even network configurations in its cloud, with regular synchronisation delivering pleasingly brief recovery point objectives. Should a user’s on-prem or other infrastructure befall a disaster, their operations fail over into Acronis cloud.
While the likes of Azure and VMware’s cloud offer comparable services, Acronis is confident its current and prospective partners will enjoy being able to offer cloud DR with not much more than a fresh install of version 7.8 and a couple of clicks.
The vendor could not offer CRN any information about the resilience of the cloud it’s using to back the service, but did assure us it has put in place proper protections.
Also new to the platform is a service that allows physical shipping of data to Acronis for initial backup seeding. Cloud-to-cloud backup for Exchange Online, OneDrive for Business, and SharePoint Online is another addition and sees backups made from Microsoft’s cloud into Acronis’.
No new release can escape a bit of Blockchain and Acronis has put the technology to use in a “Notary Cloud” that CRN has been told “creates a unique digital fingerprint for files and stores it in a public blockchain ledger, enabling independent validation of a file’s authenticity and existence at a specified point in time.”
rhipe, Ingram Micro and Synnex have all already adopted the new release, with Synnex general manager Michael Tea saying “Acronis Data Cloud represents excellent opportunities for all our Service Partners to leverage monthly billing models, which is in line with our Synnex Technology as a Service program.”
