There is an almost inordinate amount of effort being put into packaging design for gadgets nowadays, a process that we can thank Steve Jobs and Apple for. With Surface Microsoft has packaging designed to be an experience, not just an impediment to getting the gear in your hands. We are a bit dubious on the importance of this aspect, but it is one of the hot trends, so we aren't surprised.
