Unboxed: Acer Iconia Tab A510

We got our hands on the latest addition to Acer's Iconia Tab family: the 10in A510. Check out the rest of the gallery for an overview of its chief features.

The Acer Iconia Tab A510 is the first Iconia tablet to run the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system out of the box. Other product highlights include a 1.3GHz Nvidia TEGRA 3 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB of inbuilt flash memory, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a generous 9800mAh battery and a raft of connectivity options including HDMI and USB.

As an added sales incentive, the A510 comes with a bonus Iconia Tab Starter Pack valued at $150 and a $100 eGift voucher. The Starter Pack is essentially a software package for Android beginners which includes a range of online tutorials and access to the Acer Iconia helpline. Currently, the eGift voucher can only be used to purchase Dymocks eBooks and EMI song downloads, although Acer claims to be in discussions with other content providers.

The Iconia Tab A510 boasts battery life of up to 15 hours (based on continuous HD video playback with wireless and bluetooth off). According to an Acer rep, this is enough to watch James Cameron's Titanic "five times in a row".

The back of the Acer Iconia Tab A510 is emblazoned with an Olympic Games logo: Acer is one of the sponsors of the 2012 London Olympics.

With dimensions of 259x175x10mm, the Acer Iconia Tab A510 isn't the thinnest tablet on the block. It is reasonably light though, weighing in at 680g.

The A510 is equipped with a 5MP rear-facing camera; the same resolution as the new Apple iPad.

The A510's rear-facing camera software is standard Adroid ICS fare.

Connectivity options include HDMI, microSD, microUSB, Bluetooth 2.1 and inbuilt WiFi (802.11 b/g/n).

The physical locking mechanism (left) keeps the tablet fixed in portrait or landscape mode.

Like most tablets we've tested, the A510's 10in capacitive touchscreen is suitably sharp and vibrant. For the purpose of these photos, we ramped the settings up to maximum brightness: the default auto-brightness setting is significantly dimmer.

Acer has added its own user interface to the Android 4.0 OS, dubbed Acer Ring. This is designed to improve multitasking and general ease-of-use, with frequently used applications and web pages automatically appearing in the ring menu.

The Acer Iconia Tab A510 is available now for a recommended retail price of $549.
