On the move: changes in the channel

DiData in the capital

Dimension Data appointed Steve Thompson as state manager for the ACT. He will take charge of a rapidly growing business which has seen staff numbers double over the past 24 months. Thompson is the former general manager Federal Government and ANZ defence at SAP. A Canberra veteran, he has worked extensively within the local ICT industry, including CEO and country manager stints at Distributed Data Processing (DDP), Ericsson, Optus and Siebel.

Symantec’s new channel chief

Symantec has announced a new leader for its A/NZ channel business, with former CA Technologies sales boss Klasie Holtzhausen joining as senior director of Pacific channels. Holtzhausen spent almost 5 years at CA. Prior he held a number of channel roles at IBM. Holtzhausen replaces Jeff Arndt, who left a 7 year career at Symantec to pursue other opportunities, according to the company. CA is now looking for a channel director.

New country manager for Getac

Synnex has hired Frank Bryan as the first local country manager for its ruggedised mobile hardware subsidiary Getac. Bryan is the co-founder and former director of Tough Corp - also a ruggedised hardware specialist. He worked for the company from 2011 until its collapse last year, performing duties that included managing Getac as a client. He joins at a time when Synnex is looking to raise the profile of the Getac brand in Australia.

Chan joins Avnet as global info VP

Avnet appointed Max Leng-Jin Chan as solutions VP, Avnet APAC leadership for Avnet in the Asia Pacific and oversee the GIS application and infrastructure team in Asia. The role also encompasses responsibility for Avnet’s operational excellence strategy in the region. Chan was formally vice president, IT, Asia, building efficiency for Johnson Controls, where he drove business technology strategy and transformation, technology innovation, and deployed major and complex systems.

Ninefold adds four

Andrew Harvey was appointed as technical community manager at cloud computing outfit Ninefold with a particular emphasis on strengthening bonds with the development community. He will liaise regularly with the developers, providing feedback directly into the product design process. Meanwhile, Toby Hede was appointed to the Ninefold team as technical lead/software engineer. Hede is a Ruby on Rails, JavaScript and agile development specialist. Joining them are Julian Valbuena, and Jason Gellatly to beef up infrastructure and customer support.

Polycom taps new blood

Polycom appointed Michael Alp as president of the Asia Pacific region where he will lead sales strategy and execution. Alp brings experience and expertise across hardware, infrastructure, and application software, and has been responsible for leading aggressive growth plans for major technology companies throughout Asia Pacific and Japan. He joined Polycom from EMC, where he was most recently vice president, Asia Pacific and Japan for the backup and recovery systems business based out of Hong Kong.

Ruckus grows its wi-fi team

Ruckus Wireless announced two senior sales appointments in the A/NZ region. Rob Post (pictured) takes on the role of Australian northern regional sales manager while Matt Hall becomes the new senior presales consultant in Auckland, New Zealand. Post’s 25 year IT career has spanned varied channel and sales roles at organisations such as D-Link, IBM and Acer Computers. Hall is charged with leading all technical consulting activities in New Zealand.

Samsung

Samsung has made several appointments in its partner business group and solutions group to strengthen its enterprise and small and medium business division. Natasha Datos was appointed manager, partner business group while Lee Williams (pictured) joined Samsung as manager, enterprise solutions group. The partner business group is responsible for fostering and managing relationships with Samsung alliance partners and channel partners while the solutions group works with clients, alliance and channel partners to develop solutions. Datos has worked in the IT industry for 15 years and prior to Samsung held roles at Dimension Data, Microsoft, Cisco, Nortel and Bay Networks. Other appointments in the partner business group include Jonathan Lloyd as strategic alliance manager, and two new partner managers; Chris Land covering Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, and Paul Hutchings who is responsible for NSW and the ACT. Williams brings expertise including the identification, architecture development and implementation of mobility solutions to the enterprise solutions group. Previously he worked for Gen-i in a number of mobility roles including technical consulting, product management, sales and strategy. Gerard Kennedy and Brett Inman have also been appointed to the enterprise solutions group, Kennedy as solutions architect and Inman as pre-sales engineer. “We are pleased to bring in some of the best talent in the industry to support the growth of Samsung’s enterprise business,” said Andre Obradovic, Director, Enterprise and SMB at Samsung.

Heyworth joins VMWare

Lenovo’s former product and alliances director David Heyworth has joined VMware as product marketing director for APAC. Heyworth stepped down from a two-year stint at Lenovo just before Christmas. His replacement is Lenovo stalwart Matt Codrington, who has relocated from Japan were he was general manager of partner sales and executive director of product strategy. Codrington becomes executive director and the general manager for SMB and partner sales. He is charged with looking after the local Lenovo channel, as well as marketing and products across A/NZ. Codrington is well versed in channel strategy having spent four years running the larger Japanese channel team. Codrington said he was thrilled to return home to Australia. Part of his remit will be launching Lenovo’s consumer Idea line in Australia. His predecessor Heyworth told CRN last year it was a matter of when, not if the line would launch locally. He confirmed the strategy saying, “The products have to come to Australia for Lenovo to build our business, but we’re going to do it the right way.” Heyworth’s VMware position was created after an internal restructure. A VMware spokesperson said the company broke up product marketing, and went to market with the new role late last year. It was the second high-profile local departure for Lenovo in the last year, following former product and sales director Chris Kelly’s farewell in June 2012 to join a technology start-up in Singapore.
