Google-owned Motorola Mobility has unveiled what it says is the first smartphone to be assembled in the US. Google chairman Eric Schmidt is clearly a fan, spotted using one earlier this month, weeks before the official launch.
Motorola is rationalising its phone range, which included as many as 45 phones in 2011. Along with the Moto X and three Motorola Droid phones, Motorola will likely have just one more phone launch this year, according to Motorola VP Rick Osterloh.
The Moto X is heavy on personalisation - customers (only in the US for now) can visit a website to choose the colour and material design for their device, and there's a raft of add-on accessories on offer as well.
NFC functionality allows handset users to easily transfer data between devices, and also means the device can send music to NFC-enabled speakers.
The Moto X does not offer the latest version of Android, but boasts a 10-megapixel camera and voice-activated user interface.
