Target: WhiteGold Solutions
Buyer: Exclusive Networks
Price: Undisclosed
Announced: August

The acquisition of Sydney-based security specialist distributor WhiteGold was the Paris-headquartered buyer's first takeover outside Europe, the Middle East and Africa and part of its ambition to grow to €1 billion by 2017.

WhiteGold managing director Dominic Whitehand said the three founding directors were "very, very happy" with the transaction, though would not reveal the value of the deal.

Buyer: Rhipe
Price: Up to $25 million
Announced: December

Rhipe, formerly known as Newlease, has been mostly known for selling cloud licensing to resellers. The nSynergy deal gave it a services capability comprising a team of more than 40 Microsoft support specialists, a "blue-chip" client base including Tiffany's, Westpac and Nike and a presence in Australia, the UK, China and the US.

Chief executive officer Dominic O'Hanlon (pictured) said the aim was to assist, not compete with, the company's 1,400-plus partners.

The crossover of vendors would have attracted Arrow: Observatory Crest's major accounts include F5 Networks as well as HP's Arcsight, Fortify and TippingPoint brands. Buyer: Telstra
Price: Undisclosed
Announced: October

Telstra has the Brisbane security and networking provider, after buying a series of IT companies. Bridge Point's "information security, network integration and management and data management solutions" capabilities were rolled into the telco's Network Applications and Services portfolio, which provides managed network and security in addition to cloud and communications.

In August 2013, Telstra bought NSC Communications. In January 2014 it bought O2 Network.

Buyer: Canon
Price: Undisclosed
Announced: September

Canon became the latest printing vendor to buy its way into the Australian IT channel by purchasing a majority stake in Australian managed services provider Harbour IT. The reseller is a significant player in the Australian IT space, with four offices in Australia, including its Sydney head office, and an offshore operation in Manilla.

With the buyout, Canon has followed two of its major competitors in the professional printing arena – Ricoh and Lanier – which have both pushed their way into IT through acquisitions. Ricoh acquired IMC Communications in 2012 and Lanier bought Inspire IT in 2013. While managed IT services is a new offering for Canon, the company already has a managed print services business, similar to its rivals Fuji Xerox and Konica Minolta.

Buyer: VTS IT

Announced: April

Managed service provider VTS IT Group acquired the assets of failed Canberra-based reseller Dataflex for an undisclosed sum.

VTS boss Glenn Kennedy (pictured) said VTS IT would keep the Dataflex name and had negotiated with Dataflex's client base of major government agencies to maintain its place on supplier panels.

The buyout marked a huge growth trajectory for VTS IT, following the October 2013 takeover of regional Queensland reseller Downs Microsystems. Read more

Target: Anittel
Buyer: Inabox
Price: Up to $10 million
Announced: November

IT and cloud services provider Anittel was acquired by Inabox in a transaction that could potentially be valued at approximately $9.9 million.

The deal creates a company worth approximately $83 million in combined revenues with more than 200 staff, a presence in 14 locations, as well as more than 300 resellers and over 1,000 small business customers.

The move also brings together Inabox’s telco wholesale operation with Anittel’s IT and cloud services business, which is one of the few Cisco partners in Australia to deploy a Hosted Collaboration Solution with over 8,000 endpoints deployed for the Tasmanian Government. Buyer: BigAir
Price: Up to $15 million
Announced: November

Fixed wireless vendor BigAir Group acquired Sydney-based managed services provider Oriel Technologies for an up-front cash consideration of $4.21 million, with two additional payments based on Oriel's performance in 2015 and 2016. The total acquisition price is capped at $15 million.

The buyout will give the wireless provider a “significant boost” to its cloud and managed services business, said BigAir chief executive Jason Ashton.

Buyer: Dimension Data
Price: $171 million
Announced: August

Dimension Data Australia purchased Oakton after proposing to purchase all of Oakton's 90 million shares for $1.90 per share, which values Oakton at approximately $171 million.

Oakton was already a partner of Dimension Data, having signed up to resell the DiData cloud in June 2013.

Target: Express Data
Buyer: Dicker Data
Price: $65.5 million
Announced: February

Dicker Data acquired Express Data from Dimension Data for $65.5 million. Chief executive David Dicker told CRN that inside Dicker Data, "Our internal code word for this deal was the deal of the century."

"I have a very clear strategy of how this deal plays out. It has an 18-month project window when various things have to be done, and part of that was doing that deal with 100 percent debt."

Dicker Data has gone on to fully integrate the acquisition and generate an average revenue of $100 million a month. Read more
